Aboriginal athletes score grants gold

The latest round of the Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program sees successful clubs and groups sharing in more than $100,000 to support athletes.

Recipients include the Robinvale Manatunga Sports Club who got $3,000 for travel to a state-wide Senior Football and Netball Carnival in Portarlington, and the First Nations Melbourne Rugby League Incorporated who scored more than $3,400 to help its under 14 boys and girls sides get to the 2024 Harmony Cup Tournament.

Koorie Academy of Basketball in partnership with Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative received $1,000 to support youth in out of home care programs to participate in junior basketball camps located in Shepparton.

The Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program delivers grants of up to $1,000 for team uniforms and sport equipment, as well as up to $2,500 for travel costs so clubs can participate in both Victorian and national tournaments.

Individuals can also access up to $250 to purchase sporting uniforms and equipment, and up to $750 for their own travel costs.

The Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program reflects the Government’s strong support for the Victorian Aboriginal community and is bolstered by the work underway to develop a new Victorian Aboriginal Sporting Partnership that will build stronger connections in the community sport sector.

Since 2020, the Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program has provided 457 grants to community sport clubs and individuals in Victoria’s Indigenous communities.
