Phoenix rise twice in Gippsland

Published: 28 November 2025

For the first time in the one NBL season, South East Melbourne Phoenix will play 2 games in the Latrobe Valley in a week-long basketball festival.

Players from the South East Melbourne Phoenix pose with frisbees next to a frizbee golf target.

Both games will be played at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS), which is currently being upgraded through the Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Program.

To kick off the festival Phoenix players met with more than 3,000 school children from 8 schools in Traralgon who were taking part in the community basketball programs on 27 November.

The week-long festival of basketball features NBL matches and sport development and community engagement activities including:

  • Phoenix Fan Zone – Ignite Cup 2025
  • Phoenix v Tasmania JackJumpers on 10 December
  • Gippsland 3x3 Schools Cup
  • Phoenix v New Zealand Breakers on 13 December
  • 2 behind the scenes match day experiences.

The last 3 Phoenix matches at the GRISS sold out, and this year’s events have been supported through the Victorian Government’s Significant Sporting Events Program.

Since 2010, more than 1,150 events have been secured through the program, with more than half held in regional Victoria.

These events keep local businesses busy, hotels and shopping strips bustling and economies strong, all while giving sporting fans a fantastic reason to visit regional Victoria.
