Regional Sports Infrastructure Program – Geelong

The Geelong community will benefit from new and upgraded sports facilities under the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

These new and upgraded facilities will provide modern, accessible venues for people to enjoy close to where they live and work.

Projects include:

  • Armstrong Creek Sports Centre
  • Stead Park
  • Waurn Ponds Sports Complex.

These projects will support players, clubs and communities, ensuring Geelong continues to thrive as a sporting hub.

Armstrong Creek Sports Centre

A new sports centre in Armstrong Creek will feature a civic plaza, 4 indoor multi-sport courts and car parking.

Stead Park

The upgrade to Stead Park, home of the Geelong Hockey Association, will include an upgraded hockey pitch, a new pavilion, and increased seating capacity, strengthening its reputation as a premier hockey venue.

Waurn Ponds Sporting Complex

A new sporting complex in Waurn Ponds will feature 6 indoor multi-sport courts, a regional-level gymnastics facility and dance studio and car parking.

26 Nov 2024 – New Armstrong Creek Sports Centre details revealed

The new Armstrong Creek Sports Centre is one step closer be becoming a reality with the search now on for a head contractor to deliver this vibrant multi-sport facility.

The Victorian Government has announced the opening of the Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the head contractor to build the centre, which will feature four indoor multi-sport courts and a plaza.

This is an exciting milestone for a project that will benefit people across the region, providing locals with a brand-new sporting facility close to home.

Applicants under the EOI process must outline their plans for engaging with local businesses, suppliers and workers, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

Armstrong Creek is one of four projects across the Geelong and Surf Coast region being delivered through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, comprising of 15 projects in total across the state.

Programs like the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program are supporting rural and regional Victoria to be an even better place to live, work, stay and play: delivering what locals want and need, close to home, attracting more visitors and helping local businesses grow.

11 Nov 2024 – Concept designs complete for new pavilion at Stead Park

Hockey fans across Geelong and Surf Coast will get the chance to find out more about their new home venue with the much-anticipated completion of the concept design phase for upgrades to Corio’s Stead Park.

Features of the development include demolition of the existing pavilion, with a new pavilion to be located in a more convenient, central position between the venue’s two hockey pitches.

The new pavilion will boast four change rooms, match official rooms, a canteen, equipment and team storage, and first aid on the ground floor. The second level will feature a social space, a meeting room and kitchen, with seating on the terrace overlooking both pitches.

The location of the new pavilion will give players on both of the pitches equal access to change rooms and amenities, and will improve spectator viewing.

The design of the venue’s western pitch includes new fencing, drainage, an electronic scoreboard and sports lighting to ensure it can host a range of activities and events including national-level hockey.

Additional parking, including accessible parking along a new access road will maximise access and use of this popular venue.

Stead Park is a significant sports facility for Corio and is home to the Geelong Hockey Association. These enhancements will strengthen its reputation as a premier hockey venue and give more players, fans and families access to the sport they love, closer to home.

Stead Park is one of five projects in the Geelong Sports Package and is one of 16 projects across regional Victoria that are part of the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, making our communities even better places to live, work, stay and play.

1 Oct 2024 – Designer takes the field for Stead Park upgrade

It's an exciting time for hockey players, volunteers and fans in Geelong, with the Victorian Government’s upgrade of Corio’s Stead Park – home of the Geelong Hockey Association – checking off a new milestone with the appointment of a key contractor.

Victorian-based CO.OP Studio has been named as the Principal Design Consultant for the project, which forms part of the Victorian Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

Enhancements to Stead Park will strengthen its reputation as a premier hockey venue and give more players, fans and families access to the sport they love, closer to home.

The upgrades include an upgraded pitch, a new pavilion, and increased seating capacity, providing Corio with top-tier sports facilities, bringing the community together and boosting local sporting talent.

Designer CO.OP Studio has demonstrated excellence in sports infrastructure design and their Field of Play sub-consultant, SportEng, is a national leader in the sports field industry.

Local sub-consultants for civil and structural engineering work and a commitment to locally sourced products and materials will create jobs and boost local businesses.

Stead Park is one of 16 projects across regional Victoria which are part of the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, with 5 located in Geelong and the Surf Coast, making our communities even better places to live, work, stay, and play.

In more good news for local hockey fans, Torquay’s Banyul-Warri Fields will see a new hockey pitch with lighting, scoreboard, spectator seating and new car park delivered.

The Regional Sports Infrastructure Program is part of our record $45 billion investment over the past decade in projects and programs that matter to regional communities.

Helping more sporting clubs shine in Geelong and beyond

The Victorian Government is making Victoria’s regional communities even better places to live, stay and play for generations to come – with more local Geelong and Surf Coast sporting clubs set to score new and upgraded community sports facilities.

Stead Park’s hockey venue in Corio will see a major upgrade to its facility with a better pitch, new pavilion and more seating for more fans.

Stead Park is one of the 15 sporting infrastructure projects getting an upgrade across the state as part of the Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, with four projects across the Geelong and Surf Coast region.

Surf Coast residents will also be able to enjoy new hockey facilities at Banyul-Warri Fields – home of the Torquay Tornadoes – including a new hockey pitch with lighting, scoreboard and spectator seating.

Waurn Ponds residents are set to enjoy a new indoor sporting complex with six multi-sport courts, a gymnastics facility, dance studio and extensive on-site parking.

Finally, a new indoor sports centre will be built in the heart of Armstrong Creek – helping to grow local sport in the area, featuring a civic plaza, four indoor multi-sport courts and extra car parking.

These projects will help increase sports participation amongst the Geelong and Surf Coast communities and bring more elite sport to regional Victoria – supporting local businesses and communities.
