Published: 17 February 2026

Elite sport returned to Shepparton as Melbourne Victory hosted Newcastle Jets for A-League Women’s competition points, thanks to the Victorian Government’s Significant Sporting Events Program.

Shepparton locals experienced elite women’s football action for the first time since 2019 as Melbourne Victory defeated the visiting Newcastle Jets 2-1 at John McEwen Reserve.

More than 1,000 fans were in attendance and showing their support, with the match being a huge win for the region.

A-League Players contest the ball as Melbourne Victory take on Newcastle Jets at Shepparton's John McEwen Reserve.

Melbourne Victory players arrived a day early to deliver a suite of community engagement activities including schools visits and a community coaching workshop.

There was also a Melbourne Victory masterclass for boys and girls aged between 6-14.

Back in Shepparton for the first time in 7 years, the visit was thanks to our Significant Sporting Events Program and additional support from Greater Shepparton City Council.

The program helps bring elite sport to the state and since 2010, has secured over 1,150 events, with more than half held in regional Victoria.

The match was a massive win for the town and helped showcase John McEwen Reserve, which is part of Shepparton Sports City.

The Sports City Precinct is currently undergoing upgrades thanks to $3 million in support from the Victorian Government’s Council Support Package.

Upgrades are taking Shepparton’s sporting infrastructure to new heights and scoring goals for athletes and community members.

By improving Shepparton Sports Stadium and VISY Community Stadium, this project will support local clubs and help to attract major events, while creating inclusive and accessible spaces for athletes and spectators.

The Melbourne Victory Women’s team will return to their regular home ground for the remainder of the season, the state-of-the-art Home of The Matildas at La Trobe University Sports Park.

Opened in 2023 thanks to more than $42 million from the Victorian Government, the world-class football facility is the home of Football Victoria’s administration, sport development, high performance programs and events.
