Maximising the benefits of Victoria’s community sport and active recreation infrastructure

Published: 4 February 2026

Sport and Recreation Victoria's Outcomes, Principles and Priorities for Community Sport and Active Recreation Infrastructure resource brings together existing policies, investment outcomes and priorities in the one place.

Community sport and active recreation is a key part of life in Victoria. The places and spaces we use for physical activity are important for our enjoyment.

For decades now the Victorian Government, through Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV), has partnered with local councils and community sport and active recreation organisations to invest in and deliver community sport and active recreation infrastructure across Victoria.

Delivering infrastructure isn’t just about participation and physical activity.

It helps build social connection, the economy, and encourages people to volunteer, creates jobs and training, and improves the quality of our environment.

That's why we’ve developed the Outcomes, Principles and Priorities for Community Sport and Active Recreation Infrastructure resource.

It aims to assist organisations to align their own policy settings to get the best out of their community sport and active recreation infrastructure.

The resource focuses on Outcomes, Principles and Priorities and provides examples of facilities that have opened doors to more local opportunities which have helped communities thrive.

Community sport and active recreation infrastructure delivers value in Victoria

Community sport and active recreation infrastructure provides more than $7 billion in health, social and economic benefits to Victorians every year.

It not only supports the activities we enjoy, but also:

  • builds liveable communities
  • strengthens social connections
  • creates jobs
  • provides training opportunities
  • boosts local economies.

See our Value of Community Sport and Active Recreation Infrastructure report for more information on these benefits.

Our new resource aims to inspire all Victorians to get active by illustrating how to maximise the benefits that only community sport and active recreation can deliver.

From the Djerring Flemington Hub to the Wallan Secondary College Sports Pavilion this resource showcases just some of the more than 330 projects we, along with our partners have supported in recent years.
