Melbourne Wheelchair Open sets up future grand slam winners
Published: 30 January 2026Six days of nail-biting competition between the top wheelchair tennis players has concluded with 3 deserving winners across the men’s, women’s and Quad categories.
As one of the largest wheelchair tennis tournaments in Australia, fans know the Melbourne Wheelchair Open is a tournament to watch as part of the broader Australian Open Summer of tennis.
Japanese players Tokito Oda and Yui Kamiji claimed victory in the men’s and women’s tournaments, respectively.
The Quad competition was won by Dutchman Sam Schröder.
Every athlete that has competed in the Melbourne Wheelchair Open is set to participate in the prestigious Wheelchair Australian Open, including Hume local and world number 6, Australian Jin Woodman who reached the semi-final in the Quad competition.

Jin saw Dylan Alcott win his first Grand Slam at the 2015 Australian Open when he was just 6 years old and knew he wanted to do the same one day.
Supported through the Significant Sporting Events Program, the Melbourne Wheelchair Open will feature the top 20 men’s and women’s wheelchair players, as well as the top 20 quad players.
Adding to the excitement, the Melbourne Wheelchair Open hosted the same 8 rising stars competing in the junior wheelchair event at the Wheelchair Australian Open.
This category brings together 8 rising stars – 4 boys and 4 girls – all showcasing exceptional talent and giving fans an exciting glimpse into the future of wheelchair tennis.
