Celebrating 50 years of saving on kids swim lessons

Published: 7 January 2026

Thousands of kids across the state are set to follow in the footsteps of generations past by learning to swim over January, thanks to the Victorian Government backed VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program that turns 50 this year.

Since 1976, VICSWIM’s learn-to-swim program has helped generations of youngsters learn the skills, water-safety and survival knowledge that is so vital in saving lives.

For families on a budget, the program also provides accessible and affordable swimming and water safety lessons across Victoria.

Over January, more than 15,000 children will take part at almost 150 locations throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The program includes lessons to develop foundational swimming skills as well as water safety education for children aged four to 12 years.

Five 30-minute lessons are provided over the course of a week in January for a subsidised cost of just $43 — helping more families afford swimming lessons for their kids.

It’s part of wide-ranging efforts to stem the tide of drownings seen in recent summers, and to ensure even more kids get their chance to learn water-safety basics at lessons that are more affordable for families.
