Helping hand for our Gippsland volunteers

Community sport just wouldn’t happen without volunteers, that’s why we’re backing organisations like GippSport who help local clubs and volunteers upskill in the areas where they need it most.

Kathryn Cooper – Secretary – Drouin Dragons Soccer Club

I've been volunteering with Drouin Dragons since 2015, the registration officer was about to leave and asked if I'd help her and eventually take over. So I did that role for a year and then a year later was asked to be Secretary as well. So I just kept picking up roles.

Volunteering is in a way giving back to the community. Time is something that I have which I can give back, so if I can't give back to the community in other ways, my time is what I like to give.

Volunteers become friends. So some families they know each other because their children are at school, some are new to the area, them participating be it lines on the day or in the canteen, they've started to make friends and because the overarching value of the club is family oriented, people are feeling very welcomed and want to participate.

We had a child safety program that needed to be delivered to all our coaches to make sure all our coaches were informed about the legislation. The training has helped the club in that our volunteers, for example our coaches, were made aware of things that they really hadn't thought of.

The Vic Government training delivered that for us. it just took one of the jobs at the beginning of the season off my hands because it's quite busy with registrations, which is one of my many roles

I raised the question, why we don't have a juniors program. So I said 'okay I'll put my hand up and I'll see what I can do'

And out of the blue then I find out about Gippsport, we find out okay, there is a body that can help launch this initiative. I didn't know where to go, what to do and what support was available from the government and that's where the government program comes in. I wouldn't know who to go to in Squash Australia to talk to, I didn't know whom to talk to In the Council, all I needed to do was ask and I got that help.

I 100% know that I'm a valued person within the club and within the community being party to the growth that has occurred, we've grown amazingly over the 10 years.

For the more people that get on board, the more awareness gets created, if everyone finds out what good work Gippsport is doing in promoting sports at a grassroots level, especially in regional areas where facilities are far and few. Without a doubt I will encourage other volunteers to get involved and spread the awareness.

Thanks to recent funding from our Sustainable Volunteer Workforce Program, GippSport’s Sports Administration Hub is going next level.

The hub now provides access to online, as well as person to person training sessions for clubs based at Drouin’s Bellbird Park Precinct who are seeking support when it comes to managing volunteers, applying for grants, running meetings, child safety and more.

So far, the Hub has helped train more than 200 volunteers at local clubs including Drouin Dragons Soccer Club, Drouin Junior Football Club, Baw Baw Squash Club, Drouin Cricket Club, West Gippsland Hockey Association and Gippsland Umpires Association.

Trevor Priest, GippSport Sports Administration Hub Trainer said, ‘It’s all about giving volunteers the skills and confidence to make club life a little easier.’

As club volunteer, Kathryn Cooper Secretary of the Drouin Dragons explains, ‘We had a Child Safety Program that needed to be delivered to all our coaches, to make sure they were all informed about current legislation.’

‘The (hub) training has helped the club in that our volunteers, our coaches, were made aware of things they really hadn’t thought of. The Vic Government training delivered that for us,’ she said.

YD Singh from the Baw Baw Squash Club said, ‘I didn’t know where to go, what to do. I raised the question why we don’t have a juniors program? Then I find out about GippSport - there is a body that can launch this initiative.’

GippSport’s Sports Administration Hub is one of 12 new initiatives backed by the Sustainable Volunteer Workforce Program.

The Program supports sport and active recreation sector projects and partnerships that help attract and retain volunteers and staff, reduce volunteer workload, and ultimately increase participation opportunities for Victorians on and off the field.

It is part of our $60 million Regional Community Sport Development Fund that is delivering infrastructure and programs to support more regional Victorian families and children to become and remain physically active.

The Fund has also recently kicked in $1 million for an oval upgrade at Bellbird Park Precinct as part of the Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

The Growing Suburbs Fund also kicked in $2 million towards recent Bellbird Park East Multi-use Pavilion improvements including upgrades to female friendly facilities and meeting and programming spaces.

Increasing sector capability and supporting the development of a highly skilled sport and active recreation workforce that in turn leads to a strong, sustainable industry is a key objective of Active Victoria 2022-2026 – A strategic framework for sport and active recreation in Victoria.
