It will transform Marvel Stadium into a year-round destination for major sports and entertainment. This will create hundreds of jobs and attract more visitors to Melbourne.

It includes a significant expansion and refurbishment of the stadium inside and out. There will be new facilities for players and guests, a Town Square, more hospitality and catering options, and better screens and lighting.

“This upgrade will improve the fan experience for all Victorians,” Associate Deputy Secretary of Sport, Recreation and Racing at the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, Pete Betson said.

“It means Marvel Stadium will continue to host our top-level competitions like AFL and Big Bash cricket.”

Construction at Marvel Stadium began in February 2022 and is due for completion in late 2023. The stadium will operate throughout construction, continuing to host games and major events.

Boosting the AFL experience

Since it opened over 20 years ago, Marvel Stadium has welcomed millions of AFL fans through its gates.

With this redevelopment, the fan experience will reach new heights. There will be full 5G and WIFI coverage, regardless of how big the crowds get.

Two video boards, double the size of the current boards, have been installed at each end of the stadium so spectators can see all the action, wherever they’re seated.

Entrance gates are being widened, large screens for entertainment installed, and the food and beverage options expanded.

These changes, combined with Marvel Stadium's convenient central location, will make it a key destination for Victorians and visitors from further afield.

“Marvel Stadium will be Australia’s most connected stadium with its array of public transport options and its digital offering,” said AFL Property Development General Manager, Matthew Chun.

“The precinct will be brought to life every day of the year with the revamped hospitality offering.”

Behind the scenes, player changerooms will be refurbished.

More than a stadium

The highlight of this redevelopment will be the stadium’s new Town Square.

The Town Square has indoor and outdoor spaces, protecting people from the weather so people can gather all year round, seven days a week. It will host events like night markets, by giving visitors another reason to travel to the Docklands all year round.

The Town Square will be fully accessible with a sensory room equipped with noise cancelling headphones, fidget tools and visual cue cards, as well as parents and multi faith rooms. These rooms will welcome guests who may feel overwhelmed by the environment, families, and people from a variety of communities.

This will turn Marvel Stadium into one of the most inclusive venues in Australia.

“Docklands is one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects, reconnecting central Melbourne with its historic waterfront,” said Executive Director of Precinct Delivery at the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions, Brad Ostermeyer.

“Upgrades to the stadium concourse will improve visitor access to the waterfront and broader precinct.

“Town Square will introduce patrons to waterfront vistas, recreational and commercial activities, as well as transport nodes - all driving connections to this regenerated precinct.”
