Lacrosse netting some great benefits for Merri-Bek

Published: 8 December 2025

Merri-Bek’s multicultural communities are embracing a new lacrosse initiative that combines fun, skill-building, and community connection while celebrating diversity.

Merri-Bek Lacrosse multicultural initiative

Developed by Lacrosse Victoria in partnership with The LOTE Agency, and Merri-Bek Council, the initiative was co-designed with community members from diverse cultural backgrounds to ensure their voices shaped the program.

For many newly arrived women from diverse Asian backgrounds now living in the area, this program opened the door to their very first sporting experience—sparking joy, building confidence, and creating a sense of belonging.

The benefits go beyond the field. Six women have completed coaching courses, stepping into leadership roles and becoming inspiring role models within their communities.

Michael Sholly, General Manager, Lacrosse Victoria explains, ‘This has been an outstanding success giving women from Pakistan and Asia in the Merri-bek Council the opportunity to play a sport for the very first time.'

‘They have been so excited that some of them have been trained to deliver our Quick Stix program to their children at their local primary school,’ he said.

On Saturday mornings, these new coaches have gone on to help create joyful family traditions and spark the next generation’s love for the game.

This Merri-Bek Lacrosse initiative was made possible thanks to our Together More Active program.

The Program is part of our Active Victoria2022-26 strategy that sets out Victoria’s priorities for sport and active recreation that ensure even more people can tap into all the benefits that sport and active recreation delivers.
