Improved infrastructure set to transform sports in Latrobe

The future of sport is looking bright in Latrobe with 4 Regional Sports Infrastructure Program projects well underway and nearing completion.

The redevelopment works at Moe’s premier cricket and football venue are making strong progress.

Demolition of the existing players’ boxes has been completed, clearing the way for the construction of new players boxes. Additional demolition works have also been undertaken at both the northern and southern ends of the oval to prepare for the installation of new spectator terraces, which will enhance viewing capacity and the overall spectator experience.

The installation of new light towers to support both cricket and football night games has been completed. Ground stabilisation, drainage, and irrigation systems have been delivered. The turf table has been constructed and new turf has been successfully laid, marking a key milestone in bringing the oval back into use.

Upgrades to the existing pavilion are also well advanced. Construction of new media boxes is underway, alongside internal refurbishments that will deliver more inclusive, female-friendly amenities and improved accessibility throughout the facility

In addition, the new netball pavilion is progressing strongly and has now reached lock-up stage, representing another major step forward in the broader precinct redevelopment.

Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium

Upgrades at the multi-sport stadium in the heart of Traralgon are predominantly complete. Courts 1-4 now have new blinds, shutters and a new officials’ change room.

Courts 5 and 6 now have new storage spaces, lighting and fit out of female toilets. Amenity upgrades to courts 7 and 8 include upgraded access ramp and other accessibility improvements. Solar panels and a battery were also installed to power the venue.

Additional works at the venue which include accessibility upgrades in the foyer and broader power upgrades are now under construction.

Morwell Gun Club

Gippsland’s only Olympic trap shooting facility is now complete. The project delivered two new Olympic Trap shooting ranges, player shelters, separation fencing, LED lighting, a power upgrade, an armoury, accessible carparks, pathways and more. Operating for more than 80 years this club has produced some of Victoria’s most accomplished shooting athletes including Todd Malone a 10-time Victorian Open ISSF team representative.

Morwell Gun Club

Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park

The major sport and entertainment hub in Gippsland has made significant strides since construction began. The existing grandstand has been demolished, making way for the new main pavilion. Both the ground floor slab and level one suspended slab have been successfully poured. Prefabricated walls for the ground floor have been installed, and works are now underway on the installation of grandstand seating platforms within the pavilion.

Construction of the change pod is also progressing, with the concrete slab completed and wall installation finalised. Roofing and façade works have now commenced, bringing the structure closer to completion.

On the playing fields, sub-base preparation works for the new elite pitch and Pitch 3 have been completed, with turf installation set to commence shortly.

The redevelopment of GSEP will deliver a high-quality, modern sporting precinct, enhancing both playing and spectator experiences. The new pavilion and change pod are being designed as complementary facilities, providing inclusive, female-friendly amenities and significantly improved accessibility across the site.

Council Support Package

The Victorian Government is also investing $5 million through the Council Support Package to help deliver a range of activities across the Latrobe Valley, such as sporting and streetscape upgrades, new community and volunteer programs, improved internet access and support for Aboriginal-owned businesses.

These projects will not only transform the region and pave the way for enhanced sports infrastructure and vibrant community spaces for years to ome, but have created jobs across the Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland region.
