New home court advantage for Wangaratta
Published: 17 March 2025The stage is set for basketball, netball, and volleyball to go next level in Wangaratta thanks to the completion of the stadium expansion project.
The newly transformed Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre features two new multisport courts, increasing the number of courts at the venue to five.
The show court has also been upgraded to competition standards, and with the seating capacity increased to 900 even more locals can enjoy the big games with the venue already hosting the National Basketball League’s South East Melbourne Phoenix pre-season clash with the Brisbane Bullets last year.
There are also new gymnasium facilities to cater for extra demand.
Together the upgrades provide a real home court advantage for the more than 2,000 participants that play in the local Wangaratta Basketball Association, Wangaratta Netball Association and Wangaratta Volleyball Association.
Adam Maher, President of the Wangaratta Basketball Association said, ‘Recently, the demand for court time has just gone through the roof. It’s great to see the extra courts providing more room for teams to train and play, it creates a real buzz around the stadium.’
The project was made possible by a $5.47 million investment from our Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program with the Wangaratta Rural City Council tipping in more than $6.9 million.
Through programs like our Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund we’re also ramping up our investment in sport and recreation infrastructure in regional centres and rural towns across the state.
From court redevelopments to new stadiums, investments like these provide high-quality and accessible places for Victorians to reap the benefits of sport and active recreation participation.
