A life saver for kids over the summer holidays

Published: 6 January 2025

Thousands of kids across the state are making a splash this summer by learning to swim, with the first of the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program 2025 swim lessons kicking off across the state.

A VICSWIM trainer and 3 students have a swimming lesson.

This summer more than 16,800 children are taking part at over 170 locations across the state, with more than 100 of these located in regional Victoria.

This year there are 400 extra spots for kids with disability and kids from multicultural backgrounds to learn a range of water safety skills with specialised teachers trained to provide the appropriate support.

Lessons for kids with disability will be provided through dedicated programs in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne. Kids from CALD families have the option of signing up for the extra swim lessons in places including Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, Sunshine, Werribee, Cardinia and Dandenong.

The Victorian Government has splashed in $917,000 towards the Aquatics and Recreation Victoria program over two years.

It’s part of wide-ranging efforts to stem the tide of drownings seen in recent summers, and to ensure even more kids get their chance to learn water-safety basics.

VICSWIM’s learn-to-swim program has helped generations of youngsters learn the skills, water-safety and survival knowledge that is so vital in saving lives.

The program includes lessons to develop foundation swimming skills as well as water safety education for children aged four to 12 years at a subsidised cost of $35 for five 30-minute lessons over the course of a week.

Registrations are still open. For more information about the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program visit vicswim.com.au.
