First Peoples young tennis stars take centre court

Our Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program is helping a new generation of First Peoples tennis stars to dream big and follow in the footsteps of legends like Ash Barty.

2026 Victorian Indigenous Tennis Carnival participants

Recently 39 young First Peoples tennis players had the opportunity to showcase their talents at the 2026 Victorian Indigenous Tennis Carnival, thanks to a Tennis Victoria initiative backed by the program.

The carnival was not only an opportunity for the talented boys and girls to compete for some coveted trophies but also provided an opportunity to impress, with 14 of the players securing a spot to represent Victoria at the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival.

Adam Watson Inclusion Manager from Tennis Victoria said, ‘A great inspiration for the players to take their match play to the next level was the introduction of the "Honouring Country" uniforms.’

‘Proudly worn throughout the carnival, the uniforms provided a visible celebration of culture and identity, fostering a strong sense of belonging among participants.’

‘The uniforms became a source of pride for players, who spoke positively about representing both their culture and their state on and off the court.’

‘The increased visibility of First Peoples culture also helped create an environment where young people felt recognised, connected and empowered.’

The benefits created by the Carnival atmosphere also extended far beyond the players themselves.

Families and community members came together to share in the experience, strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for cultural connection through sport.

By combining sporting opportunity with cultural celebration, the initiative demonstrated the powerful role sport can play in strengthening identity, building confidence and creating meaningful connections across communities and provided a fantastic new pathway for these young athletes to take their sport to the next level.
