Diving into swim coaching
A new Victorian Government-backed partnership is giving aspiring swim coaches from Victoria’s Barwon South West region an edge in and out of the water.

‘Diving into the Future of Swimming’ is a Swimming Victoria and Diving Victoria project that has rolled out a number initiatives in the last 6 months, from a 3-day pilot program introducing over 30 first timers , to a training workshop in Geelong upskilling more than 30 swim coaches from the region from
At the recent development coaching course, Swimming Victoria Sport Development Officer and project lead Jess O’Brien said, 'Our regional workforce face obstacles including access to resources and geographical barriers.'
'This project allows us to support clubs where and how they need it most to build a sustainable aquatic sector within regional Victoria.'
Coach Lynda McKenzie from Timboon, a seasonal club situated nearly 3 hours from Melbourne, said, 'This training will mean our small regional club will have the same opportunity, and level of coaches as larger clubs across the state.'
Swimming Victoria, in partnership with Diving Victoria, has also created a new Aquatic Leader role in the Barwon South West region to address challenges such as declining volunteer numbers and pool closures.
Diving into the Future of Swimming is one of 12 new initiatives backed by our new Sustainable Volunteer Workforce Program.
The Sustainable Volunteer Workforce Program supports sport and active recreation sector initiatives and partnerships that help attract and retain volunteers and staff, reduce volunteer workload, and ultimately increase participation opportunities for Victorians on and off the field.
It is part of our $60 million Regional Community Sport Development Fund that is delivering infrastructure and programs to support more regional Victorian families and children to become and remain physically active.
Increasing sector capability and supporting the development of a highly skilled sport and active recreation workforce that in turn leads to a strong, sustainable industry is a key objective of Active Victoria 2022-2026 – A strategic framework for sport and active recreation in Victoria.
