Pit building shifts up a gear for Albert Park locals
Published: 16 May 2025A redevelopment of the iconic pit building in the heart of Albert Park will deliver brand new community sporting facilities for the public and transform the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
Melbourne’s iconic Albert Park Precinct will be better than ever for both the community and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix with upgrades coming to the famous pit building.
The project will include the new pit building, plus improvements to the surrounding Precinct, delivering better facilities for Formula 1 fans and local clubs.
Built in 1995, the original pit building will be replaced to bring it into the 21st century. Head contractor Icon has been appointed to deliver the project which will meet the year-round demands of community sport and provide a multi-purpose venue for a range of events.
The new building will include 7 indoor sport courts, 2 more than are currently on site, alongside improved clubrooms for tenant clubs using the outdoor fields. This will make sure local sport benefits from the upgraded facilities for the long term.
The new pit building will be complemented by additional park upgrades that benefit all park users and help invigorate the precinct.
With Formula 1 bigger than ever, the new pit building will ensure the race has the infrastructure to match other host cities, showcasing Melbourne to the world and helping maintain Victoria’s prized place on the race calendar for years to come.
To supercharge race day, the new facility will include 14 garages, race control, and a race administration and media centre. For motorsport fans, the world-renowned Paddock Club at Albert Park will be expanded to fit 5,000 patrons, offering amazing hospitality experiences and prime viewing spots along the main straight to see all the action.
The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix continues to reach record heights with the 2025 edition welcoming 465,498 fans through the gates across the 4 days. Hotel occupancy in central Melbourne was around 94% on the Saturday during the race.
It is a pillar of Victoria’s enviable calendar of major events which provides a boost of over $3.3 billion a year to our economy.
Initial works on site are already underway with demolition works to begin after the 2026 race and be completed in time for the 2028 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
