It is estimated that over 580000 people volunteer in the sport and recreation sector in Victoria each year. These figures indicate that volunteering in the sport and recreation sector is greater that the number of volunteers attracted to the health and social sectors.
Volunteering is thought to build community cohesion and provides people with social network and a focal point for civic activity.
The Ministerial Council for Volunteers was established to advise the Government on how best to support and strengthen the volunteer sector.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Industry, Employment and Volunteers Ms Gabrielle Williams MP is Chair of the Council.
The Council will provide high-level, independent advice to government, through the Minister for Families and Children, about issues affecting volunteering in Victoria and inform a coordinated, whole-of-sector approach to supporting and strengthening the volunteer sector. More information on the Ministerial Council for Volunteers can be found on the Ministerial Council for Volunteers page of the Victorian Human Services website.
