The bridge, the new pedestrian gateway from the CBD to Melbourne’s world-class sporting precinct Melbourne Park, is open in time to usher hundreds of thousands of fans to the 2017 Australian Open.
The new Tanderrum Bridge provides a safer route for fans, and stops crowds from crossing Batman Avenue at road level, so that the thousands of spectators at our long list of events can arrive and return home safely.
The bridge lands in the heart of Melbourne Park – the home of the Australian Open – and provides direct access to Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Garden Square.
It’s part of the Victorian Government’s $338 million Melbourne Park stage two redevelopment, which will ensure that this Australian icon retains its status as one of the world’s leading sport and entertainment venues. The redevelopment also includes a major refurbishment of Rod Laver Arena and a new administration and media building.
The 2017 Australian Open will have something for everyone. The Australian Open Festival at Birrarung Marr will provide entertainment for the whole family, and kids can hone their skills at ANZ Tennis Hot Shots.
A new music festival, The Open Sessions, will ensure Australia’s greatest sporting event boasts a terrific atmosphere too. The 2017 Australian Open begins on January 16.
Through initiatives like these the Victorian Government is making sure Victoria continues to host the biggest and best events all year round.
