Big win for Oakleigh indoor sports
A new state-of-the-art indoor sports stadium and gymnastic facility will be built in Oakleigh thanks to a $3 million Better Indoor Stadiums Fund boost.
The $17.1 million project is in partnership with the City of Monash and will make the new Oakleigh Recreation Centre Indoor Stadium and Gymnastics Facility a reality.
The project will include five multi-sport courts catering for basketball, netball, volleyball, table tennis, soccer and badminton.
There will also be retractable seating for 800 people on the show court.
The project will also deliver a modern and spacious new home for the Waverley Gymnastic Club, which, with more than 1,400 members and 30 coaches and growing, has clearly outgrown its current base in Mount Waverley.
Inside the new facility, gymnasts of all ages and abilities will enjoy 2000 square metres of space to host competitions, junior and educational programs, as well as holiday programs and birthday parties. It’s expected the new gymnastics facility will create an additional 1000 participation opportunities a week.
Indoor stadiums are at the heart of our suburbs and towns, and a hive of activity for more than 450,000 Victorians that play sports like basketball or netball.
The Victorian Government knows demand for indoor court space is outstripping supply. The Better Indoor Stadiums Program will ensure more players can get on the court where they want, when they want.
The $22 million Better Indoor Stadiums Program is in addition to the $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund which is upgrading grassroots facilities including tired grounds and ageing clubrooms across the state.
